Video Playback Engineer | Senior | ExoPlayer, Shaka, HTML5, DRM, Android TV | Hyderabad | Work From Office | Full Time
We are hiring a Senior Software Engineer for the Player Engineering team of a large scale streaming platform. You will design, build and optimise playback across connected TV and living room devices on a hybrid stack that combines native Android (ExoPlayer) with HTML5 WebView based UI. The work is deep and specific: ABR algorithms, network handling, startup time, buffering behaviour and playback resiliency across a wide and fragmented device estate.

• Role: Senior Software Engineer, Video Playback (Streaming and Broadcasting, Player Engineering)
• Experience: 5 to 10 years in software engineering with a strong consumer product delivery record

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Design and implement connected and living room device solutions that improve network handling, ABR algorithms and playback resiliency using ExoPlayer, Shaka and related technologies
• Optimise playback performance, startup time, buffering behaviour and video quality across a wide range of connected and living room devices
• Collaborate with frontend and platform teams so WebView UI and native playback components interact cleanly
• Work with streaming protocols including HLS and DASH, and with DRM
• Debug and resolve complex playback issues across diverse device ecosystems and partner implementations
• Partner with subject matter experts and video specialists on playback architecture decisions
REQUIRED TECHNICAL SKILLS
• Professional software engineering experience with a strong delivery track record on consumer facing applications
• Strong expertise in frontend engineering with HTML5, JavaScript and TypeScript
• Hands on experience with ExoPlayer, MediaCodec and DRM technologies such as Widevine
• Experience with hybrid applications combining native Android components and HTML5 or WebView based UIs
• Familiarity with integrating JavaScript interfaces or bridging mechanisms between WebView and native
• Working knowledge of HLS and DASH streaming protocols
PREFERRED / BONUS SKILLS
• Shaka Player or other JavaScript player frameworks
• Experience across connected TV platforms such as Android TV, Fire TV, tvOS, Tizen, webOS or Roku
• Playback observability, QoE metrics and A/B testing of player behaviour
• Working with CDN behaviour, manifest handling and low latency streaming
PREFERRED INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE
• OTT, video streaming or connected TV products
• Any consumer platform delivering video to millions of viewers across fragmented devices
SOFT SKILLS
• Comfort working across the native and web boundary rather than in one camp
• Patience and rigour when debugging device specific playback failures
• Clear communication with video specialists, platform teams and product
• Ownership of quality end to end, from prototype to production
TOOLS YOU WILL USE
ExoPlayer, Shaka Player, MediaCodec, Widevine DRM, HTML5, JavaScript, TypeScript, Android WebView, HLS, DASH, Git, CI/CD pipelines, playback profiling and QoE tooling

• Sits in the Player Engineering team within Streaming and Broadcasting
• Works with video specialists, frontend and platform teams, and device partners

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Playback is where streaming either works or visibly does not, and the people who are good at it are rare. If you have chased a buffering regression through ABR logic to a manifest, know why a WebView bridge adds latency, and have shipped a player that behaves on cheap TV hardware as well as flagship devices, this role will use all of it.
